The hallmark that makes our company different is how we refinish hardwood floors. In addition to our training the process is fundamentally correct from the start because of our equipment. We use ONLY the Lagler Hummel for our initial sanding of hardwood floors. In using other belt sanders on our floors we have found those machines to consistently produce chatter and leave old finish still on the floor because of inadequate head pressure on the machine. Quality hardwood floors are created in the finishing process. At Modern Tech Floors we use the Lagler Trio for ALL of our final hardplating steps. This machine is fundamentally superior to traditional floor buffers. The Trio is powered by 220V electrical, weighs 50% more, rotates at 4 times greater speed, and possesses the best fine dust collection in the industry. The result is a flatter floor with less softgrain dishout. Very few hardwood flooring contractors in the Portland metro area use the Lagler Trio because of cost of ownership and the greater operating cost. We feel it is important to mention this because this machine makes a tremendous difference for the quality of a hardwood floor and is an overlooked point when consumers compare estimates.
One of the latest changes in the hardwood flooring industry has been the development of some very good dust containment vacuums. Dust collection during the hardwood refinishing process is achieved because vacuum systems never allow the dust to enter the air. The dust is contained in a closed system and travels from the sander through a hose and direct into a collection bin. Currently we are extremely pleased with the performance of a system called the Oneida Vac system. The real success of this system is that it can be run from a distance outside of the house, which even further minimizes the chance for dust to enter the home.
